Westgate Foundation has been operating a Community Employment Scheme since 1995. Community Employment (CE) is designed to help people who are long-term unemployed to get back to work by offering valuable part-time, temporary placements in jobs based within local communities. It gives people the opportunity to gain new experience, build confidence and enhance their skill-set whilst contributing to their community.
Westgate Foundation currently employs 35 CE participants, all bringing a very positive contribution to the running of the organisation. The project is managed by the Community Employment Supervisor, Eve Phillips and by the sponsorship management committee. Positions on the scheme include Care Assistants, Catering Assistants, Drivers, Security Personnel, Maintenance & Gardening staff, Cleaning Operatives and Reception & Administration staff. All CE positions are for 19.5 hours per week and participants can take up other part-time work during their placement. When working on CE you receive the equivalent of your Social Welfare payment with a top up of €22.50 as your weekly wage. However, there is a minimum CE wage payment of €210.50 per week.
To participate on the Westgate Foundation Community Employment programme, you must register at your local INTREO Employment Services Office and meet certain Eligibility Criteria. Eligibility to participate on CE is generally linked to those who are 25 years of age or over and in receipt of an Irish social welfare payment for 1 year or more.
